Sonya’s work is a refreshing and rhythmic orchestration of line, shape and color. Creating her complex compositions brings her a sense of relaxation as she works steadily to cover an entire surface. Many times Sonya begins by laying down color that emanates from one corner of the paper or canvas; often this is then layered with intricate and repeated shapes drawn in marker. Her shapes are familiar: cats, fish, people, houses, triangles, stars, hearts, suns, and flowers. They repeat, overlap and one seems to evolve from the last in the world the artist has created. Sonya has been part of the Starlight Studio program since close to its opening in 2005. During these years she has explored numerous media and modes of artmaking to include fiber, weaving, collage and clay sculpture. Sonya has been in many exhibitions and her art is in many collections.
